When Cathy was diagnosed with breast cancer, she saw an opportunity to educate and inspire family and friends about her journey. During her year of treatments and recovery, she wrote weekly e-mail updates that informed and entertained readers through humor and insight.
Cancer Dance (the book) is the collection of Cathy’s updates that brought tears, laughter and uplifting encouragement to family, friends and other cancer survivors. Beginning with medical information and procedures and continuing through new-found spiritual experiences, Cathy’s updates intertwine her cancer journey with an otherwise intriguing life.
As a sign language interpreter and professional working in the field of disabilities services, she provides us insight to many cultural experiences. As a dancer and cancer campaigner, her participation in cancer fundraising events inspires and encourages others to join in the fight against cancer.
Through photos and stories of each week’s passing, Cathy shares how she coped with the devastating side effects of cancer treatments. Discover the tricks she learned to help her recover and the epiphanies that inspired her to keep going and keep writing.
Although many cancer survivors have praised Cathy’s updates as helping them through their own cancer journey, everyone whose life has been touched by cancer can benefit from reading this year-in-the-life experience.
“Cancer Dance chronicles one woman’s breast cancer experience through a series of e-mails sent to relatives, friends and many unknowns. Humor is the essential component of the e-mails. As the story progresses, one is drawn into the plot (a plot not to her liking), McClain's willingness to share her most intimate feelings.
The greatest contribution of Cancer Dance is the message of hope. McClain's ‘dance’ is an effort to help women with breast cancer. It is a refreshing and positive narrative.
Let’s dance.”
Ernie Bodai, M.D., F.A.C.S. Director, Breast Surgical Services Kaiser Permanente, Sacramento Founder of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp
Catherine McClain is currently working as a sign language interpreter for a deaf doctor during his internal medicine residency at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento California.
